PUBLIC SERVICE HOURS

WHERE CAN I DO THE PUBLIC SERVICE HOURS THAT THE JUDGE ORDERED ME TO COMPLETE FOR MY SENTENCE IN COURT?

A common condition of a sentence for most misdemeanor and traffic offenses is to do public service or community service work through a legitimate non-for-profit organization.

Prior to completion of the sentence written proof will have to be provided to the Court confirming that the hours were completed.

Procedures vary from county to county and each Judge may have a specific requirement.

You will need to be careful depending on where and who sentenced you.  Read the paperwork carefully to determine what is required.  Some orders allow you to volunteer at any non-profit organization of your choice.  In other situations, you might have to get prior approval from a judge or probation officer before completing your community service.

If you do not follow the proper procedures, the hours may not be accepted and you will have start over.

Failure to complete the sentence as outlined could result in a jail sentence being imposed

Before you start your public service hours find out how the organization will confirm your hours and provide you proof for court.   Some organizations have their own form they will provide.

If not, we usually recommend the organization provide the following information:

  • Name, address, and phone number of the organization
  • Name of person and contact number for person providing proof for verification
  • Total number of hours that were performed by you.
  • A brief description of the work performed

Public service contemplates you will not be paid for the services rendered
